Watching Nintendo fumble console launches (sometimes whole generations) is one of the few constants in my life for the last 30 years. Dropping first party support for previous gens within 12 months, nothing compelling on the next gen for 18-24 months and now, egregious pricing for hardware and software. You'd think they'd learn what not to do, especially after doing it a half dozen times.
Is the Switch 2 really fumbled? I swear I just read the other day that they've sold more than predicted.
Right?
Sold more than predicted at launch (wasn't it one of the fastest selling consoles ever?), had a steady holiday (I assumed everyone that wanted a Switch 2 got one by Christmas or bought one as soon as they could because of tariff threats), then this spring I remember seeing they had really strong sales numbers again.
It's lemmy. people just want to hate on anything that isn't steam and linux pc gaming. also bitter that nintendo games can't be purchased for like 75-90% off MSRP like most steam games.
the takes on here about the gaming industry are completely delusional if you start looking at numbers.
but it's not about reality, it's about their weird little console war mentalities that pc gaming is superior and gaben is the only good billionaire, and every other gaming company is evil and stupid.
I would say it definitely was a success if we go by the numbers. That being said it's pretty bad news for costumer protection that it didn't fumble. Nintendo's costumers will receive their wake up call in a few years when the console is outdated, servers shut down/moved to the next thing and games stop working without downloading crucial updates. Or when stick drifts start piling up alongside other problems.
My Switch and the pro controller got really bad stick drift . That was enough reason for me to not get a Switch 2 but there are so many more reasons why I think the platform kind of sucks and won't end well despite it's undeniable success. People just don't care about any of that I guess. At least not yet.
I don’t know if I agree Nintendo customers will get upset that the console may “outdated” in a couple of years.
The Switch was outdated on day one. It struggled to render Kakariko Village in BotW at a steady frame rate. But did that really stop the system from selling millions? Not really. The average consumer kind of doesn’t care about that stuff.
That said, the Switch 2 is certainly more expensive than the Switch 1 so things may be different this time.
I didn't say its selling poorly but I feel the points I made are pretty valid. In terms of units sold, it's done very well but it's not selling as well as predicted and they have cut production for this quarter by a 30%.

It had RECORD sales. Nintendo did a great job that supply met demand and scalpers didn't ruin it for a lot of people. Cutting back after your launch delivered to your core base should be a standard, not an exception. Hating on Nintendo is justified in many areas, but this isn't warranted.
So because it is selling well and had the best launch ever for a console, the over inflated software and hardware prices, sparse software lineup and dropping support for the switch 1 are no longer valid points? Everyone keeps supporting the one point I didn't (and won't) criticize while refusing to discuss the very honest points I do bring up. It's the same post launch issues they've have every generation since the n64 and the best anyone can say is "it sold well". Yes, it sold well, what about everything else about the system?
For first party support, Tomodachi Life did just come out, and sales data shows that around half of the sales were for Switch 1. Switch 2's launch year was certainly lean compared to the excellent 2017 Switch lineup, but there were a lot of heavy hitters from their top IPs and that wheelchair basketball game. With how similar the consoles are, I'd imagine we'll still get a handful of first party Switch 1 titles like Rhythm Heaven and cross-gen games like Metroid and Pokemon Z-A.
The Switch was fairly underpowered when it launched in 2017, so the fact that we're even getting new games for it more than a year after Switch 2 is pretty nice. And it'll get third party/indie support for many more years--Switch 1 install base is the second biggest for a console ever so it's throwing money away not to continue support.
Asian parents always underestimate their children
Sorry, they can't hear you over the slurping sounds of the Nintendo Defense Squad.
I guess raising the price of accessories didn't bring in enough dough. After all, if the base console price is still too expensive, and the games are being priced upwards of $80 dollars, who the fuck would want to spend more on accessories?
I say this as someone who bought the Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle at launch. Aside from Legends Z-A, Kirby Air Riders and Forgotten Land + Star Crossed Worlds, I haven't put much time into other games on the system. I've been playing my Steam Deck more often. I'm thankful I got the Switch 2 at it's "lowest price". I've also decided to buy physical games because I can at least resell the games for credit towards another.
I'm able to play any game I want on my Deck, and I find it's openness as a console-PC hybrid MUCH more appealing than the Switch 2. PC ports of Nintendo games are on the rise and I can't wait for more!
I don't doubt that the switch 2 is going to be a great platform. I've owned everything they've released and loved all of them except for the virtual boy. I'll even defend the greatness of the Wii U.
The switch 2 might be the first one I skip, they've priced me out of owning it at this point. MSRP on tears of the kingdom is $115 Canadian which is insane. I would be unlikely to buy two games for that much, never mind a single game.
It's insane that the pc is easily the most affordable gaming platform at this point but I'm not going to pay $130 after tax for a game when I can get equally good games for $40.
Switch 2 game prices seem to be going down, not up. Especially digital versions. We’ll see if that trend keeps up when more tentpole games come out though.
Definitely not the case here in Canada
I’m referring to new releases. Like star fox and the new yoshi game. But yes, looking at US prices.
yeah but ai something something
Yeah there's fewer games to port now than with the wiiu -> switch so they actually have to make new games, and that takes forever. Hd ports only do so much. But somehow it is actually selling really well. I don't mind owning one but I wish there was more to play.
