Sardine and pilchard are common names for various species of small, oily forage fish in the herring suborder Clupeoidei.

Sardine is a preparation, not a species.

Understood. In my opinion, part of science communication is allowing the inquisitive a chance to relate to the real world example.

Saying Clupeidae or Herring isn’t going to be understood like “sardine”… like the weird thing people put on pizza or in cesar dressing.
