It'd be a tough claim to say I'm disappointed, as the technical fiasco today was completely predictable and expected. But, I did get my hopes up a little, only to have them dashed.

The reason I got my hopes up though is that this time the site loaded normally, pages rendered quickly, buttons worked, so it gave the illusion that Steam might be functional this time around. As you probably know, normally when a sale starts or new hardware goes on sale, the site just stops working, bugs out, slows to a crawl, etc.

Unfortunately, after getting the controller in my cart, the checkout failed at the payment processing step. I tried a few different payment methods. I tried on a few different devices. No luck.

After stepping away for a little bit, I took a peek and saw that the controllers hadn't sold out yet. I figured I'd try it again. Still broke at the payment step, but this time there was a different error message than the one which showed up initially. I decided to remove the controller from my cart and see if it would work after re-adding it. Only when I went back to the controller landing page, it now said that these things are out of stock.

A little bit after that I saw a post here on Lemmy saying something along the lines of "if you have the controller in your cart but couldn't check out earlier, try it now, it will work." So that was kind of a final "fuck you" to me.

If it's any consolation, I have the controller in my cart since release, have enough money in my Steam wallet, and I still can't buy it. Tried often enough.

Someone mentioned in another thread putting the money in your Steam account before the product becomes available, because the payment processing is usually the problem.

I did and even that failed. I was spam clicking the continue button for 15min until it randomly went through

[–] artyom@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Doesn't sound like it failed.

Well I’ve got lucky, it failed only about 1000x before it let me trough

I had money in my account from a friend's gift I was keeping aside for the controller, and after a few attempts where it errored out I was able to place my order

This is what I did. Followed by 30 mins of clicking purchase. Finally went thru.

That did not work for me either. Though full disclosure, I only tried to purchase a game with it during the outage, but it failed with the same messages I was getting with my other payment options.
