Did anyone see that guy who snapped his skateboard in half so it would fit in the carry-on, so he could avoid paying the 89 dollar charge? It got viral enough to gain Tony Hawk's attention

Serious question: What was the entirety of his logic, destroying his skateboard? He may as well have thrown it in the trash & not bring it onto the plane at all, because it's useless after breaking it in half.

I have no idea about skateboard prices, like at all. But maybe a new board is cheaper than their fee was. You can repurpoe the wheels after all, which I imagine to be the expensive bits.

He would have wanted to keep the trucks/wheels/bearings/etc (if you keep that stuff a new board alone would be cheaper than the fee) and it's a lot quicker to snap the board than sit there taking it apart.
