oh please don't let this game be a meme. I hate that uncanny valley abomination, and I don't care if it's on purpose. I had to get it off my steam homepage

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 weeks ago (6 children)

I downloaded Doki Doki LC because it got removed from play store and I wanted to see what the hype was.

What the fuck? It's sooooo boring, does it even get good or is it just a dating sim for weebs?

I'm fully aware I might be missing something or even not giving it enough playtime, my attention span does not care for it.

Anyway, hopefully this doesn't turn out to be shit because of hype hype rhythm rhythm

What the fuck? It’s sooooo boring, does it even get good or is it just a dating sim for weebs?

let's just say, you haven't played long enough

[–] Juice@midwest.social 24 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It gets really good. You are being set up to think what youre thinking, keep going

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Ok then, that's a relief

I'll stick at it. Based on everyone elses replies I should just suck it up and carry on

[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yes, keep playing! It plays it totally straight for an hour or so, then it gets good.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

But now they're expecting it. It doesn't have the same effect when you tell them

[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

While I'll edit my comment to be more careful, I don't think that it ruins it in this case, especially without knowing what exactly happens. This user clearly has heard the buzz already.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Check the other comments. There's some that get entirely too close to spoiler territory.

Honestly, it's a recurring problem with DDLC. A lot of people who are willing to play it are weebs (myself included), and as a demographic they're famously lacking in moderation in discussion

[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Exactly. I'm confused why you're singling me out when it's the other comments that are borderline spoilers. Clearly he already knew something different happens after a little playtime, even before these other comments.

I'm not really trying to start a shitfight over verbage, which is why I've edited it so we can all rest easy. But it feels a little like walking on eggshells to avoid saying there's

Tap for spoilera twist

in a 10-year-old masterpiece primarily known for

Tap for spoilerits twist. I even knew about the twist when I decided to play it. Still a 10/10. Even these spoiler tags kinda imply something big is going to happen, should they read without looking.

Yes, it would be cool if everybody could watch the Sixth Sense fresh for the first time, but it's just kinda not in the nature of discussing things that hinge on a twist.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Exactly. I'm confused why you're singling me out when it's the other comments that are borderline spoilers.

Your comment was the easiest to reply to, not wholly sure why. And to be honest, I wasn't planning on making it an entire conversation, just a one-off. It's when you pushed back on the spoiler claim that made me reply again.

[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago

That's chill, I apologize if I came across in an aggressive manner.

[–] bunnyBoy@pawb.social 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Like the other guy said, at risk of being wooshed, how far did you get into it? It should become obvious pretty early on that it is NOT a normal anime VN

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I wouldn't call it "early on". It takes 3-4 hours total to get entirely through the game

[–] bunnyBoy@pawb.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

Okay, maybe it isn't obvious before the end of chapter 1 that somethings up, but even before then it shows the cracks a bit

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You need to play it longer. It is not a dating sim. It is a horror game and it is absolutely fucked up.

[–] Sabata11792@ani.social 3 points 3 weeks ago

Don't think OP is cut out for it, may have to leave it hanging.

[–] ZeldaFreak@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Are you serious? Because if yes, then you played not enough. The first act is like a dating visual novel. After that point, it's not. Still it stays a visual novel and that won't change but it's not dating. If you need a non story spoiler to know when the point is reached:

The SpoilerThe game resets to the main menu after a scene and it looks like it begins from the beginning but you notice it's different. Thats the point where it changes.

Of course a visual novel is a different kind of game and I usually don't like it, as its mostly reading, with a few choices. Its like reading an interactive book with a few visuals.

Edit: fricking spoiler tag didn't worked in the first time

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

I'm not bothered about it being a visual novel at all, just didn't like slow it is.

Everyone else who replied has basically said the same thing so I'll keep going.

I'm just about to do the festival so in reality I'm probably only at chapter 2 or something

[–] ZeldaFreak@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

The prep for the festival is Act 1. With the first day of the festival, Act 1 ends. So its not that much ahead of you.

I've looked at my Steam page and in my Review 8 years ago, I actually wrote that the first Act is kinda "uninteresting". My playtime is clocked in at 45 Minutes, for the original game. The plus version I played on Switch but the main story is the same.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 3 points 3 weeks ago

Keep going mate, you won't regret it mate lol

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago

I watched a video of someone playing it a few years back and that was good enough for me

[–] Dominion727@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Just gently open the door.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

You need to do multiple playthroughs. You'll understand more later.

For me, one playthrough lasted somewhere between 1-2 hours, but it's been years since I last played

[–] GandalftheBlack@feddit.org 8 points 3 weeks ago

I feel like I might be getting whooshed here, I can't tell if you're being serious
