I find it a very sad place, it's like there's been an economic depression there for the past 20 years, which it has since industry moved and stopped paying rates and providing jobs

Then the artists & students and people looking for cheap housing close to the city moved in. A much more eclectic mix, and quite an interesting one. Thriving art scene and good food available very cheap (compared).

Footscray has been cheap and mixed for as long as I remember. When I studied and worked in the area a few decades ago there was a thriving immigrant community and lots of artists and students. It hasn't changed in that regard.

Don't miss out on going to the market. The fish/seafood section was AMAZING the last time I was there.
