Unfortunately, Americans will never perceive their side is losing / has lost unless large swaths of United States civilians experience intense suffering or die as a result of the opponent's military actions.
The US / Western approach to war is essentially, "Whoever inflicts the most suffering is the winner, and whoever is made to suffer the most is the loser."
It's how Americans can still see themselves as the winners of the Vietnam War, for example.
Like genuinely, to many Americans Iran will be seen as the loser of this war unless they fucking nuke like a quarter of the US population into oblivion, or somehow did a fucking land invasion of the US and war-crimed the civilian population into submission.
EDIT: Also it's by definition not "scot free" if you lost two expensive planes to get back the guy, fuck I hate my fellow USians.
Valid. Osama Bin Laden killed 3000 people on 9/11, and the US responded by killing thousands of American soldiers, hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals, wasted trillions of dollars and 20 years, all with literally zero positive outcome. Literally NOTHING changed.
DFI for Iraq changed.
Oil proceeds routed through USA.
