The Great Recession in Europe, the economic downturn that began in 2008, resulted in job and income loss, which demonstrably contributed to a rise in poor mental health among those affected. The COVID-19 pandemic, and the measures put in place to contain the virus, similarly caused a spike in the prevalence of poor mental health due to job and income insecurity. Moreover, this crisis negatively impacted mental health through other factors, notably social isolation and the deterioration of working conditions in sectors such as care.

Question; these trends must somehow be worldwide anyone has a take on this from their region?

Here's a summary of the European crises since 2009:

  • 2008–2009: Great Recession Global financial crisis triggers EU-wide recession, banking collapses, and rising public debt.

  • 2009–2018: Eurozone Sovereign Debt Crisis Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, and Spain face unsustainable debt, requiring bailouts and austerity. Social unrest and political instability follow.

  • 2015–2016: Migration Crisis Over 1 million refugees/migrants arrive, straining borders and fueling far-right politics.

  • 2016–2020: Brexit UK votes to leave the EU, causing economic uncertainty, trade disruptions, and political fragmentation.

  • 2020–2022: COVID-19 Pandemic Severe recession, lockdowns, and EU recovery funds. Accelerates digital and green transitions.

  • 2021–2024: Inflation and Cost-of-Living Crisis Post-pandemic demand, supply chain issues, and Ukraine war drive inflation to 10%+ in some countries.

  • 2022–Present: Russia-Ukraine War Russia’s invasion disrupts energy supplies, sparks refugee surge, and forces EU to boost defense spending and reduce reliance on Russian gas.

  • 2018–Present: U.S. Tariffs and Aggressions Trade wars (steel, aluminum, tech tariffs) and geopolitical pressures (e.g., Greenland crisis, NATO disputes) strain transatlantic relations.

  • Ongoing: Climate Crisis Extreme weather, green transition policies, and political tensions over climate action (e.g., farmer protests).
