I have some experience with spirits too.
as I said, I like shikantaza.
what meditation technique do you like?
Depends on the purpose but for the most part I focus inwards to unravel the layers of the self. My awareness flows from existing as I present myself, then to my thoughts and mental feelings, then to the physical sensations, and then finally to nothing at all. It's not a formal technique but I did most of my learning from Buddhist teachers.
From there, I get visual hallucinations quite easily and can manipulate the colors/energy into more complex shapes. I suppose my practices are less about affecting the material world as they are about understanding my mental world.
My meditation is what it is but my interactions with spirits as a rule involve materially helping me or my friends. Briefly, I get in a certain state and then I make a request.
