I think the red apple was too mild, so that the tajín flavour took the front seat. But definitely, having followed your suggestion, peeling and cutting it into chips was best, because otherwise the apple peel ended up tasting waxy/tough by comparison when the apple flavour took the back seat.

Will try with green apples next (haven't got any on hand
