A lot of hate for groups like trans and queer people really does feel like it's rooted in historically christian self-shaming for sexual desires or kinks. When people are taught to repress something there is always a segment who express that repression by directing hate at those they view as not doing so. For the repressed, seeing others who are free feels like a personal attack.

I think it's also an overcompensation, covering up the repressed feelings by loudly demonstrating how much you hate it.

It can also not have that at all of course, but in some cases it's the only explanation I have, and I've spoken to quite a few trans people who admit to having been transphobic before their eggs finally cracked who have all said they think it was overcompensation.
