No, the media trope of having them in your hands is a myth.
Once a process server tells you that you are served and you have eyes on the papers, it doesnt matter whether or not you touch them.

That’s what the process server is for. They’re there to make sure the target person has the paperwork. Whether the person accepts it or not is irrelevant, the server can swear in the court that the person knows the documents exist and had the opportunity to read them - not that they accepted them.
