Most probably the tree is a fagus. What illness or damage though I don't know.
Thank you! The forest is full of pine, oak and beech trees. The bark doesn't look like oak or pine and didn't have needles.Thus, fagus is quite likely. It would still be very interesting if someone else has an idea of what might have caused that deformation.
