Went to a Japanese restaurant and they were playing Japanese TV news on the Pearl Harbor comment. The staff and even the owner came out to watch. I just cringed… America is too embarrassing.

America is too embarrassing.

Always has been mate. And it's just the US by the way, "America" is the name of 2 continents.

North America and South America are the continents names in English, they’re not called America and America.

Ok, Mr. strict rules, I was aiming at North and South, or Central as well if you want to be fancy. But following your strict rules, America also isn't the name of a country. It's just a part of one. Canada and Brazil are also a part of America, it's just that US Americans don't know there's a world outside their own country.

But my autism agrees with you :)

Sadly, it's quasi-official to say America as a stand-in for USA. Just like "Larger Middle East" became a real term after Americans (sic) used it for some time, probably to justify atrocities.

Many US Americans consider Kentucky the middle east so the fact it's a term based on the world map is at least some credits to them lol.

But the US is the name of two countries. How do I know if you're talking about USA or Mexico?

[–] Thor_Whale@lemmus.org 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Mexico dropped the United States of Mexico a couple of years ago. So it only is USA.

Did they? Wiki still lists it as EUM.
