Explanation: Lincoln's famous facial hair was actually suggested by a letter from an 11-year old girl, who proposed that he would look more dignified with whiskers, and thus more likely to win election. Lincoln wrote her back warmly, but musing that he might seem odd if he suddenly started growing out his facial hair after years of being clean-shaven.

Apparently, he eventually took the advice to heart!
