interesting, had to look it up and you are half correct.

it still is officially the DoD, although there was an executive order stating it can legally be referenced as the DoW too

(a) The Secretary of Defense is authorized the use of this additional secondary title — the Secretary of War — and may be recognized by that title in official correspondence, public communications, ceremonial contexts, and non-statutory documents within the executive branch.

The executive has no actual authority to change the name of a department. So I am fully correct.

you are half correct because department of war is now the legal name the department of defense can also go by
