The health secretary thought he was offering practical advice to people who can’t afford their groceries anymore.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy is addressing the affordability crisis by asking Americans to eat more liver and less steak.

“There’s a lot of good food in grocery stores that goes to waste. Most of the cheap cuts of meat are very inexpensive. If you buy a porterhouse steak … it is gonna set you back,” the secretary said as he gave the keynote address at the “Eat Real Food” rally in Austin, Texas, on Thursday. “You can buy liver, or the cheaper cuts of steak that are very very affordable.”

Nothing’s wrong with eating liver. But to put the burden of the affordability crisis on the choices of everyday Americans rather than the administration he works for is woefully out of touch.

Porterhouse? Bitch, Im over here unable to buy fucking ground 80/20 chuck because it's doubled in price. I'm stretching chicken breast to last 2 meals! I'm flat out eating less trying to stretch our food budget.

I don't know your situation, your budget, or your ability. But on the off chance this is news: dry beans go a lot farther than chicken, per dollar, and also fill you up.I think lentils go even farther.

I hate being hungry. So I've found cheaper-by-volume options for things.

You're not wrong but sometimes I crave something more than rice and beans.

Whole chickens are much cheaper per pound than any individual parts. Then you get to make bone broth once you finish the meat.

I was being a bit dramatic on the post. I'm still able to buy meat proteins but I just budget it out better now. I don't get to buy beef nearly as much as I used to, fish too. My main meats are now chicken and pork since they are most cost effective. I am eating less, but tbh, it's better portion control anyway.

Unfortunately I hate beans, always have, so I bulk out mostly with rice and grains. Appreciate the shout out though, many more worse off than I am who might need the info.
