This entire Tumblr post is incoherent.

TL;DR:

  • The author never says when "now" starts; they're just wistful for some time that allegedly existed.
  • This time never existed. Singing, dancing, and making art have always been skills that have always been judged.
  • Citing "birds sing" is hilarious, because birds sing explicitly so they can be judged as part of sexual selection.
  • Bees will fucking die if they can't properly build hives.
  • Doing things to get good at them is a thing humans do. The author is trying to arbitrarily delineate "natural" from "unnatural", failing to realize that everything humans do is natural.

I agree. The largest point to be highlighted is that learning and building skills is just as beautiful and natural as singing and dancing is portrayed in this post and intertwines with all of these activities.

But I mean it's clear to me that this post is probably teenagers trying to intellectualize why they want to be lazy.

Being charitable: it's clear this is misguided im14andthisisdeep intellectualization as a defense mechanism, but it makes some sense to feel like you need to push back in a time when so many things you do are presented online to everyone permanently for judgment and every skill is ~~blood~~ hustle for the ~~Blood~~ Hustle Culture God. It's just that this specific line of pushback is abject nonsense. It could totally be teenage laziness, but I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that what they actually meant was lost in sloppy rhetoric.

Hey, who's saying musicians don't learn to get fucked?

~Anyway~ ~here's~ ~wonderwall~

Amateur musician here, been playing most of my life. I got into it before I started liking girls, and it didn't occur to me until embarrassingly late that playing music could be attractive to girls. Like, successful rock stars with money and parties, yeah, but why would any girl be interested in my dorky, quiet, underweight (back in high school lol) ass just because I can play guitar and piano well enough to do open mic...

Now I'm like duh, what else them strong, dextrous fingers do?
