Even if you don't use it, if anyone who has your number uses truecaller then your number, profession, and social graph etc will be recorded and shown to other users.

Let's fight back by unlisting our numbers from truecaller.

Despite being a product I've never heard of before either, apparently tens of millions of people have installed it from the Google Play Store.

Most likely, they're getting that info from data aggregators/resellers. Telling them to delete your number is just treating the symptom
