The reason medabots never caught on is that fighting robot tech is still today not advanced enough to have good fighting robot toys to play with.
We did severely miss out on a good Medabots figure game to play like Beyblade had

See. I know they kept trying to make increasingly complicated fighting action figures. It seems like the tech could have been there you know. Maybe it wasn't scaleable
Why would that be the case when Pokemon did so well? I know it's not robots, but I assume the salient part is "fighting" rather than "robots" or else it'd be very obvious to point to Transformers (which can be sold on the basis that at least they transform). Then again, there's Bionicles too, which are basically robots and don't transform (mostly?)
