There were many depictions of knights fighting snails in the margins of medieval manuscripts. Either there was a centuries long war against giant snails, or maybe it was some kind of medieval meme.

Killer bunnies also make appearances, but giant snails were more popular.

I like to think that there was one time traveler that went back, introduced the meme/thought experiment about escaping the immortal snail that kills you instantly if it touches you (and knows where you are at all times), and peaced out.
