What's the deal with so many communtities being locked? News, politics, antifascism? (hexbear.net)

I don't get it. I posted something in badposting because I couldn't' find anywhere else for it and it appeared in privacy instead, so I don't know what's going on. If all of these are locked then why even have them? I spend five minutes trying to figure out where something goes and I get an error message saying it's locked.

If I had to guess I'd say the moderators abandoned their accounts for whatever reason.
It happens, people stop posting and start on other sites, I do it too.
