I feel like they still think they're in the majority and they are just waiting for the tide to turn any day now and they will be popular and beloved, people are just being forced to watch this diverse stuff, hey guess what guys we USED TO BE PROUD OF BEING CALLED THE MELTING POT WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO YOU?

Proud of the melting pot?

I'm proud to be a part of the Quilt of Diversity in Canada

In the modern era they refer to the "salad bowl" rather than the "melting pot" because "melting pot" implies cultural erasure during integration, but "salad bowl" combines while maintaining individual unique characteristics.

Wait, it's not because they want to slather us in vinegar and oil and then eat us?

As a serial immigrant I don't particularly care what they call a multicultural society as long as they accept people who were not born there into it.

This started to be a thing when I was in grade school and I definitely thought it was pretty silly. I remember my 7th grade history teacher not knowing how to respond when I asked if the salad bowl included the native Americans whose culture the US tried to destroy.

(I was a precocious smart-ass at the time)

But then I have to think about salad and that's not enough red meat!

Is "cultural mosaic" not what's used anymore?

[–] Trex202@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

I've heard it both ways

It's an old saying they used in History class here to describe the rich history of immigrants and how they built up this country: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melting_pot

Those are some beautiful quilts, is there a particular one? This one is amazing https://quiltofbelonging.ca/
