  • Behavior: fearful, cowering, snaps at leash, low growling during intake - likely due to stress

ABOUT MARGO:

Margo is a 1-year-6-month-old Chihuahua mix who is extremely stressed in the shelter. She is fearful, snapping at the leash, and showing defensive behaviors, but she is not aggressive. With a quiet, patient, rescue or foster home, she can decompress, gain confidence, and thrive.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Dogs like Margo are at high risk in the shelter due to stress and fear-based behavior. She needs a calm, experienced foster or rescue to step in immediately for safety and socialization.

Margo does not deserve to die in the shelter for being scared. She needs ONE RESCUE OR FOSTER TO STEP UP to save her life.

lf you can help, please email IMMEDIATELY and include her ID #A2056864:

wtf, do they euthanize a dog 3 DAYS after being in the shelter? what the fucking fuck?

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 34 points 2 months ago

Overpopulation and the fact that she has some behavioral issues. That’s the sad reality for many municipal shelters.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The biggest shelters here in San Antonio use random lottery for euthanasia, and have very strict cutoff times. By making it random and Boolean, they're saving their volunteers from the PTSD of putting down some other animal because a family showed interest in an at-risk pet, but didn't come back the same day to pick it up.

It fucking sucks so much, on every single level. Sometimes, a system that puts down animals the day after they arrive is the less horrifying option.

I'm so so so so grateful for our two dogs that my spouse and I were able to get from the shelter, and feel like the luckiest person alive to see both of them come out of their shells as over-eager yet fearful little ladies who now wrestle and cuddle every single day. (Somewhat of a high note to end this comment on)

I'm going into work but my gf is heading over now

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thank you and her so much - please keep me posted, and I’ll update the community.

[–] CreativeShotgun@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Looks like some kind of rescue picked her up ☹️ we have no idea where she is now

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh thank you so much for trying, and I’m sorry it didn’t work out - but I am glad to hear she was rescued by someone.

You truly have a kind heart - you rushed in to save a creature that would be hard to take care of, despite all the potential challenges. You seriously have no idea how amazing that makes you.

Thank you.

If you do find her let me know, I'm still very much interested in adopting. I've got tons of experience with chihuahuas

I am almost done with work for the day and will do some sleuthing!!!

UPDATE: I was able to locate Margo at a local rescue and passed the info on to CreativeShotgun. Thank you all for your support for this little critter!

I really hope someone adopts this dog, good luck.

this is the best time for me to share my journey of adopting a similar dog. if you get to the end of my comment and it inspires you to help (this dog or any animal) in any way you can, thank you.

I adopted a senior shih tzu that was extremely aggressive and blind from cataracts. the person holding my future dog was at a pet store about to consult to see what the pet store can do about finding her a new home. my mom was passing by and commented how cute the dog was, and the woman asked if she wanted her.

apparently, she was bouncing around home after home because of her aggression, the second to last family abandoned her with church people that didn't have the resources to help her after two months.

when I got her, she was covered in knots everywhere because local groomers could not handle her aggression and would quit midway. hell, there were 2 moments I was ready to give her up... I was tired of the constant biting and blood she was drawing from me. however, I am so glad I persevered.

if you are reading this and have the capacity to not give up when working with an aggressive dog, please do.

I will not lie, the road to where she is now was very hard and difficult. she was always biting me, cutting my skin and making me bleed, anger management issues like crazy at first. she is still aggressive and doesnt like to be touched at all, but it is absolutely nowhere around where she was before I gave her stability and I was able to get her eye surgery to fix her vision. now that she sees, she is so much more confident and actually allows me to pet her sometimes

here she is a couple of days ago wagging her tail like crazy!

I really wish heaven is real because you and people like you deserve to live there after you die. Thank you for giving this grumpy dog such a good life.

And also good news - it looks like Margo was fostered by a local rescue, and we have a fellow lemming willing to adopt her. I’m just trying to find out where she is so I can connect them.

thanks, and this is great news! I see the other thread you have with the other commenter.

I'm rooting for you both and hope you keep this thread updated! 🙂

A lemming is currently being reviewed by the adoption agency, if their application gets approved, they will let me know, and I’ll update here.

The most important part is that Margo is no longer on “death row” so even if this application falls through, she will find a forever home elsewhere.
