Can't viable organs only be harvested from living bodies? Did they harvest them from prisoners, or did they just cut up the bodies for fun?
No. How long after death they can be usefully harvested for tranpslant very much depends on the organ. Not long, though. Within hours in most cases, and more than a day in some. https://www.blade.com/how-long-are-organs-viable-after-death

Similar things were done in open secret in the American south from up until the 50s-60s.
Black people would be pulled over and arrested on bullshit charges, beaten, killed, and suspiciously have organs removed all while in police custody.
