It doesn't make sense on a narrative level. The whole point of the questline is that you have no autonomy; you're just a crop for him to sow and harvest. A lot of the gods don't give you that sort of choice either, telling you to do as you're told or not finish their quest. The ones who don't are usually testing you to see if you're worthy.
