"Noam Chomsky advised Jeffrey Epstein to “ignore” public scrutiny of his sex crimes, according to newly unsealed files which appear to show a close friendship between the two men.
Chomsky’s exchanges with the late paedophile financier, which span several years, are contained in a tranche of over three million documents released last Friday.
In one email from February 2019, the renowned leftwing academic dismisses “the hysteria that has developed about the abuse of women” and advises Epstein “not to react unless directly questioned”. Epstein killed himself in his prison cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking.
“What the vultures dearly want is a public response,” writes Chomsky in the same email, expressing sympathy for “the horrible way you are being treated in the press and public”.
Other emails contain conversations about their planned trips to Epstein’s Caribbean island, medical conditions and global politics. Their exchanges do not indicate any wrongdoing on Chomsky’s part, but underscore their social and financial ties.
In an email from 2016, Chomsky apologises for cancelling dinner plans, noting that his wife, Valeria, had “prepared [Epstein’s] favorite dessert”.
In a 2019 email from Valeria Chomsky to Steve Bannon inviting the former Trump advisor to their home for a meeting, she also refers to Epstein as “a very dear friend”.
In another exchange from 2016, Chomsky and Epstein discuss Venezuela under Hugo Chavez, which Chomsky deems a “major disaster”. “Is it socialism at its finest?” asks Epstein. “Wasn’t remotely like socialism,” Chomsky replies.
Epstein’s financial filings released in the latest drop also appear to include multiple payments made to Chomsky and his family, including 20 separate gifts to his grandchildren’s trusts.
This batch of Epstein files has further exposed the financier’s intimate relationships with powerful figures, including ‘The Duke’, an alias believed to be Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and former UK ambassador to the US Lord, Peter Mandelson, whose links to Epstein led to his resignation from the Labour party on Sunday."
