Purely asking this for some fiction writing

Balkanised has become slang for "region formerly in a federation or union that has split into many small independent nations after the fall of said Union. Like happened in the Balkan region with the fall of USSR"

No, was more of a slow and gradual "we're leaving or else!" for member states in their case, except for a few which had a bit of a cold war, partially cause USSR had spread itself too thin and knew it couldn't hold them if a hot war broke out.
