adam curtis said this thing about how generative AI is the ghost of our time, because it goes back and scrapes the available media fragments of our past and stitches them together, in a cubist form, and feeds it back to us. remixed/reverbed fragmentary echos of our images, music, emotions, language being presented to us as if it were new, keeping us stuck in the past.

i bring this up, because these reactionary culture war militants haunt themselves with the same premise. the idea that their perception of history is skewed by the prejudices and bigotry of the institutions which gatekept culture and storytelling for decades is completely out of bounds. anything that doesn't fit what they've seen up to this point has to fabricated, in service to an agenda that doesn't center their experiences, perceptions, and values.

of course, none of them are serious archivists or historians, so their minds are full of mutilated thought fragments and unexamined notions about what the world was/is, that they have bundled together under some incoherent frame that gives them license to feel angry or betrayed. absolutely nothing can be allowed in unless it reifies something already there.

That one minute clip reminds me of how much I miss his weirdly hypnotic voice overs.
