If you find an injured owl:
Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.
Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.
Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.
If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

It does help! I was gonna ask about their size! Thanks for bringing these birds to life for us! Its now my dream to see and recognize more owls in the wild! OotY was a huge education for me on the types of owls out there and the more posts I see the more I learn about our regional types. Just yesterday I learned that ESO are northern too! Are they just too small to see?? I'll just have to look harder!
Screech Owls are everywhere between northern Mexico and southern Canada. They're small, about 8 in / 20 cm, and they weigh 160, about the weight of a billiard ball.
I released one in my back yard, and add soon as it got in a tree, it practically vanished. They're nocturnal, so they're usually hidden in a cavity during the day. Their markings are so well suited for blending into trees.
I'd really like to get some size/weight accurate mock ups of a Screech and a Great Horn for our open house. Since we can't let the public hold owls, I think it'd be a very useful aid.
I'm glad you enjoyed OotY, it teaches a ton and still just scratches the surface of all there is to know about these amazing animals. If there's anything in particular you want to see or ask about, feel free anytime. Just drop a comment somewhere, I read them all. It doesn't need to be about the subject of the post or anything, I'm here to talk about what you want to learn.
