Why not both. Mess them up, then mess up the floor with their brain matter. It'll be small mess, we all know there's nothing between their ears

Did he ever join the war effort in the old comics like superman did?

He did more selling bonds than direct combat that I know of. But yeah, Batman got in on it. World's Greatest Comics #9 cover has him throwing baseballs at their faces for example
