That’s 100% what it is. Guided by the “””thought””” leaders, 90s nerds who are angry that their invented memory of “back in the day gaming was only for basement dwelling white losers like myself,” (which was never true lol). It’s gatekeeping plus bigotry. What a lovely combination.
Same shit is happening with Warhammer and I presume any traditionally “nerd” culture that is becoming more mainstream than it once was. These people have their entire identity wrapped up in what essentially boils down to a fucking hobby of some kind, and are so fragile that somehow they see that hobby (read as: their entire pathetic sense of self) as threatened by outsiders because… reasons.
Sometimes I write down entire comments that I'll save, and not post, but seeing that your comment is very close to some thoughts I've had on this matter, it's time to share it. This was on the topic of ''Geek'':
The problem with capital G gamers is that they've made gaming their identity. What you called ''Geek''. Geek is a consumer product. How do you become more Geeky? By consuming media. Do you see what I'm getting at? If you base your self around an identity that is not rooted in reality, but on the consumption of fiction...what do you have?
The nature of capitalism is that class solidarity is going to be hollowed out and replaced by consumption instead.
Building community spaces so people can "go outside" ("touch grass" etc) and exist in the physical world is revolutionary praxis in the current stage, IMO. Not saying it's top tier shit, but so many people are wondering "organize? What's that? PSL/DSA/start a union? Too difficult/not practical for me"
"Meet your neighbors, invest in your public spaces and urban environments " are adequate starting points, in my opinion.
