I mean yeah that was a big part of why I left reddit. I saw a millions of subscribers front page sub crack down on bots one day around the time of the API drama and...wow.

The entire subreddit crashed into the floor. The vast majority of not just posts but upvotes were bots. Sorry I can't remember the subreddit name. I wasn't subbed I found out via subredditdrama.

Seeing the stark contrast of ~14k upvoted posts with hundreds of comments the prior week and then suddenly ~100 upvoted stuff with barely any comments on their page 1 was so disturbing* I quit that day. Haven't been on Facebook since 2015 or any other social media site since so I'd probably react the same as Grandma here. I'm only using fediverse and SomethingAwful forums these days.

For me it was when they decided that the front page was going to be curated based on their algorithm regardless of what you were actually subscribed to. This was most apparent when you would switch from mobile to old-reddit on a desktop and get a completely different front page.

Aye, that coffin had a lot of nails in it already!

Don't forget the censorship to make sure advertisers are happy.

I think spez the doomsday fetishist and Elon Musk brown noser is a techbro status quo enforcer, not just about the ad rev. Ignores russian bots and their cancerous rigged subreddits too. I remember when MetaCanada had a leak showing a couple Russians ran the entire subreddit with an army of alts.

Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on instances like lemmy.world censoring calls for violent resistance?

Why not profit and automate brainwash the masses at the same time!

I'm not a fan of the censorship, I'm also not a fan of the calls for violence. I also know they don't want to get sued or sent to a torture prison in some shithole you can't find on the map. I understand that you can't have both. Then take into consideration the motive of profit from reddit and (idk the lemmy.worlds admins motive but I assume not profit because lack of profit) and I find the greedy reasoning upsetting and at the scale of reddit oppressive.

Is a messy question without a good answer. I don't think there are peaceful options for some problems, but don't want the violence, but then nothing changes if violence was the correct answer. What if the justice system intended to quell societies violence fails entirely and you got a government operating outside the law killing and black bagging people, only fair to want a solution your alive enough to see(IE. the US news). People are getting killed by a government that is not following the law and that is scary af, but also the government out scales your in violence a billion times so you can't win.

Reality is uncozy and full of vague shitty conflicts with no correct answer or conflicting definitions of correctness that way. Sorry if its a bit of an overly American rant.

Gods yes, which is why I was curious since your initial reply was about censorship.

Sorry if its a bit of an overly American rant.

No need to apologise it's relevant here and I'm forced to think about this crap a lot these days.

I'm less opposed to violent resistance myself I decided as an Albertan looking at the seperatist movement here. Let's say the worst case scenario happens and our traitor leading party, Smith, and the foreign influencers game the system enough to force it to happen despite being majorly unpopular and their plan is to become a 51st USA state. I do think there's enough people fed up with traitor Smith to force her out kicking and screaming if it came down to it.

That said I agree with you that any instance admins who don't want the heat are justified in not allowing anything risky to their own well being. I'm thankful for those who are willing to risk their own necks however. It's harder to organise offline I think with the death of 3rd places in our two countries.

My inkling is I'd be initially joining with the natives on a reserve to organise. These are people who are suing Alberta gov currently because AB has no rights to their land and their treaties are not with Alberta, only the federal government. They've burned Catholic churches to the ground in response to Residential School mass graves and blocked train tracks to protest land right violations in the recent past. I like their spunk.

...I'm getting way into the weeds for a good news forum, shit. Sorry guys.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one that rebooted my time on SA. There's no real system to game on a forum, so ai bots don't get so far with whatever they're trying to peddle

Between the IPO and the API acronym salad, reddit became a cesspool overnight. That might be a problem with any mainstream social media tbh. As long as there's enough audience, bad actors will infiltrate and enshittify. I'm curious how resilient lemmy is to it, there's different safeguards, and the monetary incentives aren't there for now, but any system relying on up voting or engagement is asking to be fiddled with.

There’s no real system to game on a forum.

Spam bots were common back in the day on phpBB and vbulletin but early captcha addons killed most of them. Modern day I think the biggest thing preserving SA is the one time 5 dollar paywall to register an account more than anything. Board culture and good moderation helps too.

I’m curious how resilient lemmy is to it

Not at all, I think we're only okay for now simply because of obscurity.

[–] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, almost forgot I paid money 20 years ago to get on there lol

[–] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

That said...that's a possible solution for lemmy long term maybe? 5 bux to reg an account.
