Nukes. The difference is nukes.
Including Ukraine. Unironically the liberals are correct and Russia wouldn't have launched their operation if Ukraine had nukes. Ukraine would've done horribly stuff in the donbass though.
How do i put it. Remember the 90's conspiracy theories that Ukraine kept some nukes and sold them to jihadists (back then Ukraine was not yet beacon of democracy in US media, but standard homosovieticus corrupted hellhole)? This proven false, but if it was true, then the world would be safer with the nukes in the hands of jihadists than in the hands of Ukraine.
