That is hope. Without any central control. People should be able to frequent and flow to better alternatives. Not being beholden to shitty mods and admins. Though there are a few small cracks in the concept. Not everyone has the knowhow or resources to host etc. But that's a bar that's low enough to be acceptable at this point.
And a lot of effort has been put into lowering that bar still significantly further, to allow for more people to participate, even at the level of running their own personal instance.
Oh, absolutely. I was very chuffed to see, talk the other day about a piefed doctor instance. And a little worried about the current state of some of the code inside it. But it's still definitely a good thing overall.

Unfortunately no. It came up in a slew of meme posts new years day.
Ah, I searched for "PieFed doctor instance", and looked through all the posts from the last week in this and the Fediverse communities, but I am not subscribed to the largest meme communities so that's probably why I missed it. Thanks!:-)
