Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Except if you use any kind of rolling or semi-rolling distro you will have to deal with extensions breaking every major update. If a different DE offers these features out of the box, it makes way more sense to me to just use that.

This. I find that most extensions don't break as gnome isn't making radical upgrades.
Yes but if the only extension that breaks is important in your workflow, you’re still left with a sour taste.
That’s why, despite needing more extensions, I’ve only iept 3-4 which never break.
