Still better than Google
Probably, but there are so many actually good and/or European email providers out there. Just please stop promoting the one known bad (or at least questionable) one.
A good example would be mailbox.org
I do support alternatives like Mailbox and Tuta and hope they grow. I also think the complaints about Proton are a bit overblown, especially the "trump supporting" tweet. But I would like to look more into the account closure story.
Proton is (so far that I've seen) the only alternative to the Gsuite that is polished and complete enough for non-tech people like my extended family to most easily adapt to. Since my goal is getting people off of Google, not getting them onto a perfect alternative, I continue to promote Proton... Hope that makes sense!
They may be overblown, but when I have the option to select a provider that didn't have an unhinged CEO, why wouldn't I just select that option? I'm also sure that there are many people there that don't share his ideology, but I'm making a decision for me, not them.
When you're making a recommendation for (extended) family, this may change things. But my problem is with people just throwing this in as a default recommendation. Without any note or qualification.
Just cause it's "better than Google" doesn't make it good. These days that's basically every thing that isn't Google, meaning that's an incredibly low bar.
As a warning, mailbox.org recycles old email addresses after a 90 days/1 year/2 year holding period after deregistration. Consider your own threat model before you use one of their domain emails. https://userforum-en.mailbox.org/topic/2366-address-recycling-reuse

I'm aware they are doing this, but don't consider this a (big) problem. I personally don't intend to change email hosts often, or ever if possible. As for mails I'm receiving, the number of contacts I have from there is negligible.
Also note that this is a non-issue when you're using them to host mails for your own domain, which is also always an option at no extra cost.
