A St Petersburg court has sentenced a 19-year-old woman to nearly three years in a penal colony after she was accused of repeatedly “discrediting” the Russian army, including by gluing a quotation on a statue of a Ukrainian poet.

Darya Kozyreva was sentenced to two years and eight months, the Joint Press Service of Courts in St. Petersburg said in statement Friday.

Kozyreva was arrested on February 24, 2024, after she glued a verse by Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko onto his monument in St Petersburg, according to OVD-Info, an independent Russian human rights group.

You know what my mid-life crisis is like? Not someone who thinks 'damn, half my life is done, I went from being a fit and thin individual pre-covid to being an overweight guy who still hasn't lost the covid weight or changed his life accordingly... also I want a sports car and date girls half my age (who would all be over 20)'

It is more like... I had no idea the world would suck like this in this way. The liberal 'end of history' myth that (neo)liberal democracy was the ultimate form of society and no more dictatorships went now to a world of hyperauthoritarianism, with all countries either being oligarchic democracies were the people are given the illusion of choice to dictatorships where even that is not granted. Where the world is run on the whims of out of touch psychopaths who don't have any understanding on how civilization and economies work other than 'do exactly what I say or you will die'. Donald Trump has effectively ended any pretense of such an order.

And even the whims of small time psychos ruin everything for everyone, like mass shooters who in some countries has resulted in continued efforts to eliminate entire sports and sectors of the economy (I am referring to Canada and polytechnique in 1989. Gun laws in Canada are being continually written mostly as a result of that one shooting that has now resulted in the effective obliteration of shooting as a sport). And no, while other shootings have happened they have not had the same effect. The worst mass shooting in canada history was done with smuggled firearms from the US and the shooter was barred from legally owning firearms for decades.)
