Feared? Maybe Yaroslav Hunka was startled a bit by the sound of applause. But Canada's got something of a mixed reputation on fascism, historically speaking.
In WWII Nazi troops prefered fighting other people than Canadians is all I'm saying here.
I don't know what the above person was talking about, but Canada has a pretty insane military record. Not necessarily a great record. One made up of insanity. Our government is also just shy of explicitly pro fascist. I think the above person was referring to our military record. Not the invite Nazis to be celebrated inside the government record.
What the fuck are you talking about?
Nazi war criminals were welcomed into Canada. Jewish refugees into Canada were sent back into Nazi Germany. Nazi war criminals were openly celebrated in parliament. Government has materially supported genocide while saying that it's abhorrent. There's lots of examples. You just need to look
I'll grant you the post-WW2 stuff had a lot of shitty and sketchy thing attached.
I don't think what happened 80 years ago reflects the current state (or even structure) of our government today.
That's a bit of a stretch. The inability of some low level bureaucrat (an intern if I remember correctly) to do a basic amount of background research before extending an invite, doesn't exactly instantly mean a government is pro fascist. Like let's knock this back down from a ten to a two on the panic scale a bit.
If you wanted to argue that Canada as a whole has a checkered past of racism and arguably some fascist tenents, you aren't entirely wrong. We have historically treated the aboriginal population terribly, and this is their land. There's the mass graves of little children, that we kidnapped against their will, entrapped and abused, to contend with. We imprisoned innocent people with Japanese origins during WWII. Like we ain't perfect either, for sure.
