What country are you talking about? The schengen area is for trade, didn't need to join the whole union for that
Schengen is a recent treaty, there were european trade orgs before that grew into the EU. For example the Montanunion.
The trade union we voted to join was called the EEF, and no Danish person ever voted to join the EU.
