From what i understand, I'm not elligible for it because I have "access" to coverage through my employer. It's available to me as an expensive add-on to my existing insurance, which I'll never request.

That's pretty unfair!

Consider writing to your local mp demanding that your tax dollars be used to expand dentalcare.

I actually suspect that I might be able to get it reimbursed as medical fees in a tax return, so... Makes sense and I should just get it?
