Much of Castro's Cuba owed a lot to the Soviet system of centralized economic control and tightly regulated political organization. Of the ML states, it was probably the least-bad, but that's damnation by faint praise. Of course, it was the Cold War, and the bar wasn't particularly high for anyone.

Economically, of course there are a great many non-sovereign communes and workers' coops even in the modern West, but I might point to the market socialism of Yugoslavia or the anarchist horizontal planning of Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War for something closer to a socialist society (in the former case, requiring one to focus on the economics rather than the repressive political administration of Yugoslavia).

Also, mandatory note from an unabashed simp for modernity: the principles of the end-state (ha) of communism differ significantly from 'primitive communism' of the sort we generally are aware of in pre-state societies, and I'm always wary when it's brought up.
