(Meanwhile, he does shift work and gets way more days off per day on than most 9-5s. Although he does volunteer for overtime a lot of those days... he's getting paid more overtime than most folks get for the same ratio of hours worked to total hours in the timesheet period, and he has the option to not do it.)

Yep. Shitty asshole children of the Cold War with just enough money to be seen as Good Upstanding Middle Class Folks but not enough power and status to really understand capitalism like the rich do or enough hardship to really understand capitalism like the poor do, make really horrible parents to be stuck living with. They don't always suck at every part of parenting, necessarily, but they do suck at treating their kids as human beings and at being pleasant people to be housemates with.
