More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.

Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

Exactly why is he wearing war medals?

They aren't war medals- medals can be given out for different reasons. He did serve in the Navy and the Air Force, though.

I looked it up, they are:

  • Queen’s Service Order (New Zealand)
  • Coronation Medal
  • Silver Jubilee Medal
  • Golden Jubilee Medal
  • Diamond Jubilee Medal
  • Platinum Jubilee Medal
  • Naval Long Service Good Conduct (LSGC) (three additional service bars)
  • Canadian Forces Decoration (three additional service bars)
  • The New Zealand Commemorative Medal
  • New Zealand Armed Forces Award
  • Garter Star

So none of them are war medals

Is the "Queen's service order" (presumably from his mam) basically just like when my mum gave me a sticker for helping do the washing up?

It is used to recognise "valuable voluntary service to the community or meritorious and faithful services to the Crown or similar services within the public sector, whether in elected or appointed office". Considering as prince of Wales he was patron of many charities and even started his own affordable housing project in the UK, I'm sure it's for something more than that

Yeah, I was just having a little joke - I actually have quite a lot of respect for his various environmental/social/other projects... but it's still quite funny to get a medal from your mum :)
