I literally doubled over laughing when they gave Machado the Peace Prize. What a fucking joke.

[–] grte@lemmy.ca 81 points 6 days ago (2 children)

They gave Kissinger a peace prize so it was already a joke tbh. I would take it as a slight to receive one.

Kissinger won in '73, right after the bombing of Cambodia. Obama in '09 as he was gassing up the jets to level Libya and butcher Afghans for another eight years. Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and Yitzakh Rabin - three avowed terrorists - all got the prize in 1994 shortly before they fell back into their low-grade civil war. Kofi Annan and the UN won in 2001, seven years into running the phenomenally corrupt "Oil for Food" program used to loot Iraq.

It's a bad award for bad people.

Obama got the peace prize for literally not being W. Bush. No other reason.

Obama fans don't like hearing about how bad he was.

Agreed, the Obama administration was rotten, but boy, was he charismatic. My dislike of him has been one point of contention between my standard-issue US liberal neighbor while helping bridge the gap with my recovering MAGA other neighbor.

Obama is the Democrat Reagan.

Did a bunch of shit that was objectively bad, but he was quick witted and great on camera, with some haters who didn't like him for dipshit reasons (racism masked by "dijon mustard" and "tan suit"), which helped to alivate the actual legitimate criticisms of his administration.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 17 points 6 days ago (4 children)

He was probably the best president we've had since Carter; which is just sad.

Fuck, that IS depressing. Every four years we just hope for someone less awful than the last guy.

War criminals after warcriminals. So actually "The least bad".

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 days ago

Crazy how Bush was so hated in 2009 that just not being him would win you the Nobel prize, and now he's a darling to American liberals

[–] CptOblivius@lemmy.world -1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Libya was a NATO led venture. That can't be pinned on solely Obama.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

Oh sure. Hillary and Sarkozy suckered him into it. But that's half the problem with Obama. Whether its Larry Summers or Joe Biden or Rick Warren or Elon Musk, there's always some rich white asshole by his side, dangling a million dollar speaking tour over his head and leading him like a rented mule.

It can be on hrc.

The 2012 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the European Union (EU) (founded in 1958) "for over six decades [having] contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe" by a unanimous decision of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

That is a bigger joke.

I'm glad Ben Norton included the bit about Machado's superrich cousin going to Miami on private jet shopping trips & making fun of how poor Americans were, it was really illustrative of what the comprador elite are like since they're the result of much sharper inequality. Mostly just really funny though

In a few more months, she'll be taking the title of President off Juan Guaidó.
