Winning elections is the least difficult part. Socialists, SocDems, and appropriating liberals have all done that, and have increasingly done so at the municipal level in the US. The harder parts are holding to basic principals when in office as the many forces of capitalism work against anything you try to do that is opposed to their interests. Having a real plan for how you'll win those battles. If the elected person in question even chooses those battles.
