Probably has nothing to do with men making sex cults /s
I do wish she'd go further in diagnosing the root of the issue, since this doesn't tell us that much except that something that is obviously bad is bad, which some of us understand and those who don't probably still won't.
Agreed. This issue is rooted in the underlying dynamics of the societies these organizations come from. For example, sex pest cults instead of proper parties grow out of reading groups in the USA because the USA is a sex pest cult society. Learning about "leftism" or whatever doesn't automatically separate people from their society of origin. For the same reason, the US "left" (again, for example) is full of imperialists and radlibs.
Another one? How did it go this time around?
This still doesn't tell us why people have reactionary facets to their ideology, merely that they do. If we want to have a solution that isn't just constantly putting out fires, we need to address it systemically.
A lot of "leftism" in the US is self-defeating because Americans refuse to eliminate their racist beliefs or accept any criticism of remaining prejudices they still hold. The most recent example being condemnation of Venezuela and Cuba by so-called socialists in NYC.
As the saying goes, white people treat PoC the same way men treat women, which is the same way cishet people treat LGBTQ+ people. And because we live in a racist, sexist, queerphobic, classist, antisemitic, zionist, ableist, capitalist country, we are surrounded by those beliefs more than we are anti-bigoted views. This is further compounded by privilege and American Exceptionalism.
