Having had four cars and three dogs, this is the kind of logic a cat owner in an abusive relationship concludes to.
If you don't like the idea of controlling your pet, just point to a wild animal, say it's yours now, and walk away. Same thing; better outcome for you and the animal. But if you insist on raising an Eric Catman, that's on you now. I'd ask you to keep it's "free spirit" chaos indoors or at least put a bell on it, but I know you won't.
This guy's out here telling on himself.
Nah, I'm just aware of the responsibilities of owning a pet. Both for our wellbeing and those around. It's not hard to understand the difference between wild and domesticated. Even just the absolute basics of teaching an animal not to destroy or kill things should be in place for you to both have fulfilling lives together. Consent goes both ways in any relationship. Otherwise, get a fish.
Also, not a guy.
My mistake about the "guy" bit.
I don't view animal companionship like you. The words you use like responsibility and ownership paints a very structured, controlling picture. Cats aren't like dogs in their domestication and I can see that being tough for a structured, controlling type of person.
Cats require a lot more than dogs and many cat owners don't realise that. When I say responsibility and ownership, I mean those literally. A pet is ownership of what's otherwise a free animal. It is your responsibility to make up for that. Companionship thrives when you're both bringing out the best in each other. If you want to own an animal aka have a pet, you have a duty.
Talk about consent, have you ever had a sit down conversation with your cat? When it's shredding things, killing wildlife, pissing on neighbours stuff, it's talking. It's saying, "You aren't giving me what I need." An irresponsible owner is only thinking for themselves and the tickbixes the cat gives them. An idiot says listening and doing your part is "controlling".
So, as I said, if someone's the kind of one of those latter owners, I expect their level of responsibility doesn't even extend to a belled collar, so they just unleash their neglect toward an animal out onto the world. But for them, they get pats sometimes, so surely they're good and their pet is good.
