I know the answer is obvious, but, why can't people who don't like what Kimmel said just stop watching his show? Why does it have to be completely pulled?

If they just stop watching, they're not wielding power over people they hate.
All of the conservative handwringing over "cancel culture" for the better part of the past decade was them wishing they could do all the canceling themselves.
He's seen that media companies that want to get their mergers approved have to suck up to the dictator first.
