We all know that conservatives are fucking liars: in fact their whole ideology is dependent on it, because without lies and mass disinformation, they’d lose much of their base of support.
I’ve noticed online, when I’m “debating” conservatives, they do this peculiar thing that I call “code switching” for lack of a better term.
In particular I notice this in discussions related to homelessness. Or maybe it’s just the context in which I see their most egregious display of this behavior.
Take the subject of the bottle bill, for instance.
In my state and a few others, when you buy drinks with certain recyclable containers (it varies by state in weird ways, like frex you can’t return cans that contained wine, even though canned wines come in exactly the same kind of can AFAIK) you pay an extra “bottle deposit,” usually 5¢-10¢, which anyone can redeem at certain locations. It’s a boon for for the poor and homeless, or just anyone who wants to make $5 appear out of thin air.
And for the homeless, it’s a damn near cottage industry. Some of my friends make more money “canning” than I made when I was working. And that’s been a thing for decades. Only recently has it become a problem, for some people.
And it’s become a problem, because of fentanyl.
These pieces of shit are trying to get the bottle bill repealed. And they’re facing an uphill battle for two reasons:
- The majority of people support the bottle bill.
- The majority of people don’t hate the homeless so much/aren’t so ghoulish that they’re cool with depriving all of us of an income because “fentanyl.”
So they come up with bullshit pretend arguments like, oh consumers are so sick of paying so much money (ten fucking cents)! Or some disgusting paternalistic argument RE: homeless people.
And what’s really fucking weird about it is they don’t try too hard at hiding how they really feel. I see them “code switch” all the time in the same comment section or whatever, telling one person “they’re breaking the law letting people return $40 worth of cans a day!” (oh heavens!) and another “put these disgusting zombies in camps,” probably banking on the average American’s dreadfully low reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
So yeah. Pardon my using this thread as an excuse to practice my writing. What is this bullshit called?
Dropping the mask, i think? They've always felt that ghoulish, just unwilling to think of themselves as ghouls and happy to adopt whichever skin they can wear so people dont call out their ghoulishness.
